Sim Racing Steering Wheels – Overview and Recommendations
The steering wheel is the most important link between the driver and the simulation. Through force feedback, you can directly feel grip, road conditions, weight transfer, and other subtle details. No other peripheral device has such a significant impact on the driving experience. Steering wheels differ significantly from one another in size, shape (round, D-shape, Formula, etc.), material, and features. In this article, you’ll find an up-to-date comparison table that compares the most important models and their differences at a glance and includes, among other things, price-performance recommendations. In the “Tests” section of this website, you’ll find detailed reviews of many of the steering wheels presented here.

Sim Racing Steering Wheels – Comparison Table
Here you’ll find a comparison table with many of the most popular steering wheels currently on the sim racing market. Various features such as size, number of buttons, and USB support are listed here to help you narrow down the now extremely wide range of choices. For each model series, only one steering wheel was selected, preferably in the base configuration. DIY projects and steering wheels that are only available as part of a bundle are not included in the list. Before purchasing, you should also always check compatibility with your own wheelbase. With very few exceptions, steering wheels with USB support can generally be used with any current direct-drive base.

Steering Wheel Recommendations
Given the sheer number of steering wheels currently on the market, it is nearly impossible to make universal recommendations, especially due to the sometimes significant price differences, as well as the various designs and special features, such as displays, additional paddles, or illuminated buttons, We will therefore attempt to divide the recommendations into value-for-money picks and steering wheels that stand out from the crowd.
Price-Performance Recommendations
Various steering wheels stand out for their excellent value for money. For example, the CSL Steering Wheel GT3 (formerly McLaren GT3) offers a feature set unique in this price range for around 200 euros, consisting of four paddles, a pre-installed QR, and a small OLED screen. However, it cannot be used with a third-party base without an expensive conversion kit. In the price range between 350 and 450 euros, the range of choices expands significantly. Here, you’ll find the first steering wheels with larger screens, such as the round 310 Apex steering wheel from CONSPIT or the KS Pro Wheel from MOZA. The MAX 01 steering wheel from CONSPIT, priced at around 800 euros, gradually ushers in the high-end segment. Here you get a feature-packed steering wheel with a large screen, numerous telemetry LEDs, and additional functions, which differs from the absolute high-end steering wheels essentially only in terms of fine-tuning and material selection.
Overall, the “budget” segment now offers an extremely wide range of options, so the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Do you prioritize a small screen, a specific LED layout, or a particular steering wheel design? If a steering wheel meets all these criteria, you can go ahead and buy it with virtually no hesitation. Fortunately, there are hardly any real “flops” left in today’s highly competitive market.

Further Recommendations
When it comes to the other recommendations, things get simpler on the one hand, but more complicated on the other. There are some outstanding one-of-a-kind models, such as the TSW Truck Wheel from MOZA Racing, which is currently unique in this form and therefore virtually unrivaled. On a different note, the recommendations here also include models that are absolutely worthy of a display case, such as the controversial Bentley GT3 Wheel from Fanatec, which has been a major talking point since its first appearances at various trade shows. Much like the Porsche Mission R from MOZA Racing or the AMG F1 Wheel from Sim-Lab, this steering wheel is primarily a kind of proof of concept or demonstration of the manufacturer’s capabilities. Many of the steering wheels in the 2,000-euro range often end up in the hands of collectors who aren’t primarily concerned with the price, but rather either specifically want to buy replica models or simply want something special.
When it comes to non-replica wheels, there are also offerings from various manufacturers that provide significantly more customization options. Notable among these are Asetek, with its modular system for the Invicta Wheel, and Ascher Racing, which offers the option of custom engraving on the front plate. In addition, there are numerous other (high-end) wheels available in all shapes and price ranges.

Compatibility, Quick Release and USB pass-through
Even though, in principle, any USB-compatible steering wheel can be paired with any base using the appropriate adapters (and, in the case of a Fanatec base, the appropriate hub to enable force feedback), there are a few things to keep in mind:
- USB pass-through: Some manufacturers have started offering wheel bases with USB pass-through. This means that the USB signal is routed directly through the QR connection, allowing you to use the steering wheel without an additional (coiled) cable that connects directly to the PC. This category includes, among others, some of the bases from Asetek, CONSPIT, Simagic, VNM, and VRS.
- Proprietary connectivity: Some manufacturers, including Simucube, Fanatec, MOZA, and Simagic, offer their steering wheels with proprietary solutions. As a result, data and power are typically also transmitted directly via the QR connector. However, to set up the wheel on a third-party base, you often need additional hubs in addition to the physical connection.
- Quick Release and Mounting Pattern: Of course, the steering wheels must also be physically connected to the base. Depending on the manufacturer, different QR systems are used here, with some steering wheels already shipped with pre-installed QRs. Many manufacturers now rely on the popular NRG-style QR, which, however, is often only mechanically compatible and not electrically compatible. To be on the safe side, choose a steering wheel with the most common bolt pattern of 70 mm. Ready-made spacers and adapters are available to adapt to any current QR system.

Steering WheelsGglossary
Below is a brief overview of commonly used terms relating to sim racing steering wheels.
| Brief explanation | |
| Anodized Aluminium | Anodized aluminum, particularly scratch-resistant and often color-finished. |
| Backlit Buttons | Backlit buttons (usually with customizable RGB LEDs). |
