Fanatec & Co. Under Attack: MOZA Racing Unveils Its First Direct-Drive Wheelbase for PlayStation 5

MOZA Racing is finally making its move into the PlayStation market. A first official teaser on Instagram shows a PS5-compatible wheel base. The full unveiling is expected to take place at the Tokyo Game Show 2026.

First wheelbase and bundle for PS5 from MOZA

After building an impressive ecosystem for PC and Xbox, MOZA Racing is expanding its offerings to include officially licensed hardware for the PlayStation 5 for the first time. The previously available MOZA wheel bases do not directly support Sony consoles, but this will change with the new model.

The manufacturer published two teaser images. One shows the new wheel base alone. The other shows what appears to be a complete bundle of the base, steering wheel, and pedals. The steering wheel has a button layout adapted to the PlayStation, while the base is branded with a PlayStation logo.

So far, MOZA has not provided any technical specifications. The name, torque, price, and release date are unknown, as is the compatibility with existing MOZA steering wheels and pedals. It is also unclear whether the base will be offered separately and the complete set will be offered simultaneously. This new product is directly related to MOZA’s partnership with the Gran Turismo World Series. Together with Polyphony Digital, the company is developing an officially licensed product. The full presentation is scheduled for the Tokyo Game Show 2026, which will take place from September 17th to 21st.

Attack on Fanatec, Logitech, and others

The move is a clear sign to established manufacturers. Although the console market is highly competitive, it also offers significant revenue potential due to its large user base. Meanwhile, the selection of official direct-drive systems for the PlayStation 5 is smaller than for the PC.

Fanatec is occupying this market with products like the Gran Turismo DD Pro. The wheelbase delivers 5 Nm by default and can reach up to 8 Nm with the optional Boost Kit. Logitech offers a PlayStation version of the PRO Racing Wheel with 11 Nm.

MOZA could put pressure on these manufacturers by offering competitive prices and a range of existing accessories. The company already offers numerous direct-drive wheel bases, steering wheels, pedals, shifters, and displays. If a large part of this ecosystem works with the new PS5 base, MOZA would have a decisive advantage from the start.

Whether MOZA’s entry into the market is successful depends on three unknown factors: the base’s torque, the price of the bundle, and the support for existing MOZA hardware.

PS5 license model

When used with a PlayStation, the wheel base is crucial for console compatibility. The safety and license chip required by Sony is usually located directly in the base. Therefore, an existing R5-, R9-, or R12-base will not become compatible with the PS5 just by using a new PlayStation steering wheel.

However, if the wheel base is officially licensed, various steering wheels from the respective manufacturer’s ecosystem can generally be used. This requires that they are supported mechanically, electronically, and by the base’s firmware. However, this does not allow for the free choice of any steering wheel from any manufacturer.

Therefore, owners of an existing MOZA base should not expect to be able to unlock it for PS5 later. Based on the current information, the purchase of the new wheelbase is required for official PlayStation compatibility.
