MOZA Racing Porsche Mission R Steering Wheel – Review

Following the recent introduction of its new mid-range steering wheels, MOZA Racing is taking a completely different direction with the Porsche Mission R Steering Wheel. This authentic replica of the real steering wheel is both eye-catching and absolutely unique, thanks in particular to its distinctive curved OLED screen and its construction from a single piece of intricately shaped aluminum.

Ordering and shipping

As usual with MOZA, the Porsche Mission R Steering Wheel can be ordered directly from the manufacturer’s shop. As always, depending on the country of delivery, it is important to note that additional taxes or customs duties may apply.

Scope of delivery

MOZA Racing ships the Porsche Mission R Steering Wheel securely packaged in a double-packed outer box. The inner part can also be used as a stylish presentation box, providing a safe place to store the steering wheel. The package also includes a small black cleaning cloth and a short quick guide.

Compatibility and QR

Thanks to the pre-installed MOZA-typical NRG-style quick release, the steering wheel is ideal for use with a powerful MOZA base. Both power and data for the steering wheel are transmitted wirelessly directly via the QR, so no additional cable is required. For use with a third-party base, the optional MOZA hub (approx. 50 euros) can be used as usual. In this case, the steering wheel is connected to the underside via a spiral cable.

Features

The Porsche Mission R Steering Wheel is a replica of the real steering wheel. It is based on the original CAD files and is equipped with the same features. Unfortunately, the Porsche Mission R is currently only available as an official vehicle in iRacing (with an active racing series) and in motorsport.

Inputs

The inputs have an unusual layout that corresponds exactly to the original. Accordingly, additional sim-specific features such as funky switches or joysticks have been omitted.

  • 4 + 4 Buttons: The Porsche Mission Steering Wheel has four white illuminated buttons on the front with a very firm and short pressure point. These are accompanied by two buttons integrated into the handles, one of which is located in the thumb area on the front and one on the back.
  • 4 Thumb-Buttons: The two thumb encoders are each surrounded by two “floating” buttons, which are also within easy reach of the thumbs. They feel slightly softer to the touch than the other buttons.
  • 2 Rotary-Switches: Two rotary switches with metal caps are located centrally on the bottom of the wheel. These can be configured via the software either as normal encoders (+/-) or as rotary switches with twelve fixed positions. They are in the middle range in terms of their trigger force.
  • 2 Thumb-Encoder: Right next to the handles and within easy reach of both thumbs are two large thumb encoders with slightly textured aluminum wheels that are very comfortable to use.

Overall, this gives you a fairly wide range of inputs to choose from. However, there are no funky switches or joysticks included that are particularly practical for use in sim racing.

Paddles

For the paddles, MOZA has opted for a hybrid solution that combines the manufacturer’s familiar design with grip surfaces made of milled aluminum.

  • Shifters: The two magnetic paddle shifters are equipped with Hall sensors and can be operated with precision. The shifting feel is rich without being too loud, and the 3D shape of the grip surfaces ensures a very comfortable hold. However, the positioning is unusual, as it is relatively high. After a few laps, you get used to it, but the shifters would be better positioned one centimeter lower.
  • Analog axes: Below the shifter, there is a paddle with an analog axis on each side. These can be configured either as a dual clutch, as separate axes (for example, for throttle and brake), or as buttons. The paddles have a pleasant resistance and a comparatively short maximum travel. Here, too, milled aluminum grip surfaces have been used, which fit very comfortably in the hand.

LEDs

MOZA also stays true to the original Wheel when it comes to LEDs, installing backlighting on four of the buttons. The button labels cannot be changed due to the permanently mounted caps, but the color can be freely configured. In addition, various telemetry effects can be displayed via the LEDs as usual.

  • Fuel
  • Pit Limiter
  • ABS On/Active
  • TC On/Active
  • DRS On/Available
  • Wheel Spin/Lock
  • Turn Indicator Left/Right
  • Flags ( Yellow/Blue/Green/White/Black)

Display

By far the biggest highlight and unique selling point of the steering wheel is the built-in display. For the first time ever, a curved (300R curvature) OLED display is being used in a sim racing wheel. It has a refresh rate of 60 Hz, a resolution of 720p, and a size of 5.4 inches. It is seamlessly integrated into the glass front and is the highest quality display of any steering wheel tested to date. Another plus point is the screen’s excellent touchscreen.

The dashboard design from the real car is displayed as standard, but other pre-designed or custom designs can also be used via the software.

Handles and materials

In addition to the display, the second unique selling point of the 320-millimeter-wide steering wheel, which weighs approximately 1,950 grams, is clearly its design language. The housing, made entirely of aluminum, has an unusual shape and sets new standards with its curved lines, as it differs significantly from the flat designs of most steering wheels currently available. This impression is reinforced by the striking curved glass front, into which the distinctive OLED screen is embedded. The steering wheel is extremely well made and feels great thanks to the slightly textured surface of the aluminum housing. The only downside is its high susceptibility to fingerprints. It’s no coincidence that MOZA includes a small cleaning cloth with the wheel.

The high-quality handles of the steering wheel are covered with synthetic suede and fit comfortably in the hand. However, there are more ergonomic steering wheels available for long racing sessions.

Software

As usual, MOZA relies on its own Pit House solution for software. This allows you to configure both the colors and the telemetry functions of the button lighting and the displayed dashboard designs. A total of five preconfigured dashboard designs are available. You can also add or customize your own designs using the integrated editor.

Conclusion

The Porsche Mission R Steering Wheel from MOZA Racing is a steering wheel of extremes. No compromises were made here; instead, a faithful replica of the Porsche steering wheel was created. This extends from the striking front to the extremely high-quality aluminum housing and the built-in inputs, regardless of the intended use for “sim racing.” The steering wheel is therefore something for absolute enthusiasts and fans of the Porsche brand. It undoubtedly stands out in any steering wheel collection and clearly sets itself apart from the vast majority of high-end steering wheels currently on the market.
